According to Watkins, Latin <bitumen> is indeed a Gaulish
loanword, from Celtic *betu- 'birch, birch resin'; OE
<cwidu>, <c(w)udu> 'what is chewed; cud; mastic gum' is
cognate, as is Skt. <játu-> 'Lack, Gummi'. PIE *gWetu-.
