The gizzard is located deeper down, behind the stomach. That's where
(some) birds keep their gastroliths. The thing next to the gullet is
called the crop in English, just as elsewhere in Germanic. I was able to
figure out the literal meaning of 'crop-goose', but it didn't occur to
me it could describe a pelican. With hindsight, it's obvious. Thanks!
