If you were an American, I'd say "put away the crack
pipe" on your Aiguptos idea.
Ionian < ion --see what /yon, ion/ means
Shams vs. *sawel --I think you'd better go back to AA
on that puppy
While I think Bernal is out in left field, there were
important contributions from Semitic and Egyptian to
Greeek civilization
And families from those countries may well have formed
part of the Greek ruling class in pre-classical times.
And fleets from those countries may well have
impressed or intimidated the Greeks enough for them to
remember them in their mythology.

NOW, my crackpot idea.
The name Miriam, Maryam, Mary, Marie, etc. is
traditionally linked to Hebrew mar yam "bitter sea".
This does not sound at all like a name you'd want to
give your daughter.
I'm guessing it more likely comes from Egyptian mery
"beloved" + some suffix or other word. Any ideas?
Yes, I know it's not IE and so, I apologize.
