Yes. It comes from Lat. paravere:dus 'horse for special occasions', a
word with a highly international etymology, the prefix <para-> being
Greek and <vere:dus> 'post-horse' borrowed from Gaulish (Celt.
*wo-reidos). The same word gave Mediaeval Lat. palafre:dus > OFr.
palefrei > Eng. palfrey.
