It's <salo> in those Slavic languages which have reduced historical *dl
to /l/. Cf. Pol. sadl/o, Slk. sadlo, Cz. sádlo. Vasmer connects it with
*saditi, the causative of 'sit' as 'that which settles, forms a layer'
(like Gmc. *so:ta, Slavic *sadja 'soot'). I have my doubts about the
details of this proposal, since causatives don't normally lose their
stem-forming morpheme *-i/j- in derivation, but the word reflects PSl.
*sadlo, whatever its ultimate origin.
