The situation of *ln cluster in Romanian is delicate because we have
only one example Latin alninus > Romanian arin(u)
I) I have excluded a derivation Latin alninus > *aninus > Romanian
arinu (that seems the logical one, at the first sight) because we
also have in Romanian anina 'to hang' :
II) Based on this, I 'was obliged' to go with the derivation:
Latin alninus > *arninus > Rom. arin(u) with a 'contextual' lost of
the first n
III) So I currently consider that:
a) *ln preserved in Romanian-Substratum (by analogy with the rn
preservation)
b) followed by a ln > rn transformation maybe 'in the same time'
with the intervocalic l-rothacism in Romanian
IV) this will lead us to the conclusion that l > r in Romanian Not
Only in Intervocalic Positions but at least also for ln > rn
