Stella (1978)  "Tradizione micenaea e poesia dell'Iliade"  (Rome)  claims on p279 that Indo-european cultures do not have stringed instruments, only wind and percussion.  You might also find something in West (1997)  "The East Face of Helicon: West Asiatic elements in Greek poetry and myth" Oxford), esp p612. 
(I found these references in a recent book on Homer).
