Five *ter-(s)

*ter-1 `to tremble, dabble'. 1. Alb trallis `to put into a stupor'
from *tro-tro-it-yo > PAlb *tror-i-t-yo thanks to haplology and
dissimilation. 2. Alb tartallis `to dither, fidget' from
reduplicated o-grade form *tar-tar-i-t-yo with regular dissimilation
r – r > r – ll: Skt tarala- `shaky, trembling, twitching'. (Pokorny
1. ter- 1070.)

*ter-2 `feeble, fragile, weak'. 1a. Alb tres `to dissolve, to melt'
from suffixed from *tre-t-yo. 2. i/e tretun/tretur `wasted, weak,
lost': Greek téren `feeble': Latin tener `feeble, soft': Avestan
tauruna `young'. 2. Alb trim `brave, young' is supposed by Pokorny
to belong to this root, but I think that Alb trim is prefixed and
suffixed form t-ri-m of Alb i ri `young' (cf. Slavic junak `brave'
from juno `young'. (Pokorny 2. ter- 1070.)

*terH- 3 `to rub, turn, pierce'.
I. Zero-grade form *tr.H1-. 1. Alb turjelë `borer, drill' from zero-
grade suffixed form *tr.H1-el-yeH2, due to *-r.H1- > PAlb –ur-, cf.
Greek teretron `id.'. OIr tarathar `auger', Latin terebra `auger'.
2. Alb turrë `turn', turr `pounce, flounce' from *tr.H-no/na:, but
kac-a-turrë `double-edged bayonet', cf. Greek tornos `circle, lathe'.
II. Variant form *tre:-, contracted from *treH1-. 1. Alb
trohë `crumb, bit, fragment', synonymic with thërmijë, from *tre:-
sk'a: with denominative trohas `to crumb, bit'. 2. Alb
trohallë `ground eroded by water', suffixal derivative of trohë. 3.
Alb trondit `to shake up, concuss, shock' from active participle
form *tre:-nt-iti, Gheg variant trand `to cause to quake, shake up',
trandja e dheut `earthquake'. (Pokorny 3. ter- 1071.)

*ter-4 `to cross over, pass through, overcome'. Oldest form *terH2-.
I. Zero-grade form *tr.H2-. 1a. Alb trill `sudden whim, caprice;
sudden flatter of wings'; b. trilloj `to make up, invent, devise',
verbal noun trillim `fiction, phantasy', all from *tr.(h)-ilo, 2.
Alb tra-shëgoj `to inherit' (see *gwa:-/*gwem- > Alb shkoj `to go'
from *sm.-+gwa:-n-yo, as well venj `id.' < *gwem-n-yo), verbal noun
trashëgim `inheritance', from zero-grade form *tr.H2-.
II. Basic form *terH-. 1a. Alb tej `through' from suffixed
lengthened o-grade form *to:r-ya, due to *o: > e and –ry- > -j-; b.
tejpërtej `thoroughly, from side to side'; c. Alb prefix tej- `over-
`: tejçmoj `overestimate', tejkaloj `overfulfil' etc.
III. Variant form *tro:- 1a. Alb truaj/truaj from attested form
trounj `to pass, dedicate': I truaj shpirtin dreqit `to
sell/dedicate the soul to the devil; to invoke the devil in cursing'
from suffixed zero-grade form *tro:-n-yo, cf. Latin tra:re `to cross
over'; b. Alb i truem/truar `cursed, damned'.
IV. Possible extended root *tru-. 1. Alb kotrup `trunk of a clan's
genealogicy tree' from *ko(m)- + *trup. 2. Alb trung `trunk', pl.
trungje, could be an inherited word from *tru-n-ko or a loan from
Latin truncus. 3. Alb truç `band, group' from *truk-s, as adverb has
meaning `together'. (Pokorny 4. ter- 1074.)

*ter-5 `woodworm, moth'. 1. Alb tenjë `clothes moth; tapeworm';
tenja e bizeles `pea moth', tenja e qepallave `almond moth', tenja e
drithërave `cereal moth', tenja e fikut `fig moth', tenja e
mollës `apple moth', tenja e rrushit `grapeberry moth', tenja e
ullirit `olive-moth', tenja e qepës `leek smudge' from *tor-yeH2 >
PAlb *tarja: and due to i-Umlaut we got final form tejë and Standard
Albanian form tenjë: Greek teredo:n `boring worm': Latin tarmes, -
itis `woodworm': Cymric cynrhonun `termes, lidex', Cornish
