As Piotr pointed out, there is a phonotactic constraint on roots
in labial + w-. Formally it should therefore be possible to derive
eg. *bhax- from *bhw-ax-, where *-ax- is the factitive known also
from *new-ax- "renew", *bhe:- as *bhw-eh1-, with the instrumental
suffix *-eh1, and to explain *bho:- by ablaut from the former,
but that would demand that *bhu- was a noun, at the same time as
it was a verbal root. The laryngeal you want the roots to end in,
provide vowel 'color'; I'd have to do the same with suffixes and
ablaut, and for other long-vowel roots too. I'm afraid I can't
get any closer than that at the moment.
