Buck's "Synonyms":
"etym. dub., perh.(through a by-form with 'dh' besides 'd'
Lat. 'arduus' "high", "tall"" etc. with development through "growth"
or "tall" (cf. Boh. 'strom')."
I'd be inclined to leave it at "etym. dub.", but there's a suggestion.
