And why not simply *s(h2)un-, extended twice with a nasal suffix in the
prehistory of Germanic? Any irregular noun was likely to be transferred
to the weak declension and the process was so productive that it was
sometimes repeated. The explanation of the double -nn- as derived from
assimilated *-ln- is unconvincing, the expect outcome of the latter
being -ll-. The underlying n-variant of the heteroclitic stem is visible
in the derivative *sunĂ¾ra- < *s(h2)wn.-t(e)ro- 'southern' = 'located on
the sun-side'.

Or rather we sometimes find stem-final *l for expected *r, which isn't
particularly surprising, given their alternation in some suffixes, e.g.
*-tlo-/*-tro-. As an alternative, Miguel has an iteresting theory about
*-ln- stems:

I don't know any.
