I'm a lurker on this list and I was surprised to learn, a while ago, that Bernal's Black Athena now is a series of three volumes. I thought his ideas had been debunked long ago - see "Black Athena Revisited" ed. Mary R. Lefkowitz and Guy MacLean Rogers (published 1996).

What are the opinions about Bernal in the academic world? Is he taken seriously? Is he regarded as a historian, a linguist or something else? What about a peer review of his books?
