Welcome Mr. Ryan!

The arguments used by Ballester, mainly demographic stability and
cultural stability are applicable in the case of the Indian
subcontinent. In addition, the subcontinent also has had occupational
stability because of the caste system. Every trade has its own
language and that language does not change until the trade itself
changes through entry of new competitors, technologies, or major
changes in the environment.

We have argued in our paper (proto vedic continuity theory.doc) that
Prakrits are basically trade languages used by the various jatis
(castes). The nature of the caste system dictates that the Prakrits
would change slowly. Sanskrit, the language of the liturgical texts
would change imperceptibley. There is no problem in dating the Rig
Veda to 4500 BCE from a linguistic point of view. All the physical
evidence already points back in that direction.
