According to Wahrig, IE *melg-.

infinitive: melken / indicative present: ich melke, du milkst,
er/sie/es milkt, wir melken, ihr melkt, sie melken / subjunctive
praeterit: ich moelke / indicative praeterit: ich melkte (molk) / perf.
participle: gemelkt (gemolken).

die Molke: "Milchserum", "Kaesewasser", i.e., "whey" (incl. drink,
powder etc.)
