It is threshed, and broken rice is an undesirable by-product.

Gleaning is not done by 'cheap' farmers but by starving people.

One thing that bothers me about the 'like but not the same' meaning is
that the -ro- disappears from the comparatives and superlatives of
adjectives, e.g. ks.odi:ya, ks.ódis.t.ha from this word.

I doubt whether that is due to -*ró being the formant but rather to the
similarity of -*r, 'part'.
