Erh, actually my view is that the alternation is laryngeal vs. no
laryngeal, not h2- vs. h1-, a view I've copied from Ehret, which is,
if I may quote again:
"The shape *?a- found in some Semitic reflexes (e.g., the noun "nose"
in #611) and in one PSC case (#317) can be understood as separate
analogy shifts to bring the morpheme into conformity with the usual
consonant-initial pattern of Afroasiatic words. But the outcomes in
other instances favor its re-construction as originally a vowel
alone."
