In Albanian it is a group of vowels and with, as I show, very high distribution. So, be it diphthong in Latin or not, it was treated in Albanian as a group of vowels.

Lat <ae> is not "a group" (except in the orthographic sense) but a way
of spelling a Classical Latin diphthong.
