You didn't read my posting carefully. Let me try again:

If the loan was early, *no:du- > *nödu- > nö:- > ne-. Extended with a
nasal, this yields <nye>.

If the loan was relatively late, *no:du- > nodu- > no:- > no-. Extended
with a nasal, this yields <nue>, alternating with <nye> in umlauting
contexts.

The latter explanation should be preferred, IMO, as it's more consistent
with the dialectal facts. If so, the sg. <nye> is analogical
(generalised from the old plural *nyenj).
