What underlies the whole word-family is the verb root *h2ar- 'fit
together, join' (reduplicated in Gk. ararisko:). Well-known derivatives
include Gk. harmos (< *ar-hmo- < *h2ar-smo-) 'joint', harmonia
'framework' and armena (pl.) 'tackle, implements' < *h2ar-m&1no-, Lat.
ars < *h2ár-ti- and artus 'well-fitting, narrow, strict', etc. Other
words, such as "order" and "arm", though similar, probably have
different etymologies.
