Oh I suppose, but then we could ask what really
motivated /Iu/ in the first place. It didn't have
to be that way, but it came to be that way. Perhaps
any change can be said to be 'unmotivated' for the
same reason that we can't predict in what way a
modern language will change in the next thousand
years :)
Regardless of that fact, that has nothing to do
whether any of these historical changes follow common
linguistic principles, which they do and which any
good theory should. This all should be implicitly
understood so I fear that anyone who doesn't get it,
may never get it.
