I hasten to add my two bits' worth:

cf *ekW- "drink" (Hittite ekuzzi, akkuwanzi), where a- is zero grade
of the ablaut vowel. Therefore compunds with ecc'- might have been
pronounced ak'-. Of course it's a problem no such forms have been
recorded. But if 'ecce iste' etc belonged to the spoken language, they
might have been avoided in writing?
