How is that to be reconciled with the durative-only status of the root
*H1es- 'be'? And of *H1ed- 'eat'? I can see they do not begin with d-,
but what relevance could that have? And if you insist on disregarding
anything following the first consonant after the root vowel you do not
get very many roots at all, and so you are liable to formulate
shortsighted generalizations of no real bearing on the language.

Good questions.

I do not think you will really like my answers, though.

In my opinion, *H1es- is a special case.

We both know of *-s as a nominal suffix indicating a state.

I believe the *-s of *H1es- is this same suffix applied to a verb so that what we have is a stative verb without the normal formants to indicate it. Since this stative formant would regularly show up as *sa: rather than *se/o, the transferral of length to those derivations which show *H1e:s- is to be expected.

If *H1es- originally was *H1e:s-, it could have easily been taken for an example of the pattern of Dehnstufen for duratives vs. Normalstufen for punctuals.

I am afraid I do not see the problem with *H1ed-. Rix lists root aorist *H1éd-, present *H1é:d-, the same Dehnstufe I assume to be one of the many ways to make a verb durative.

Since I believe *H1ed- can be analyzed as *¿E-T?A, 'tooth-give', 'bite into', I would assign it an original punctual meaning.
