This suggests to me that the etymology of _Are:s_ is 'cutter'
or 'ploughman', if the IE root *xer(H)- originally meant 'cut'. If so,
then *xer(H)trom originally meant 'cutting tool' and later acquired a
special connection with the soil, becoming 'plough'.
