March being the first month (March 1 the start of the new
year), and December the last.

The period between Decemeber and March had no calendar.
There was nothing to do (agriculturally speaking) in those
months, so no point in keeping track of which day it was
exactly (as long as you knew on which day March and the New
Year was to start, of course).
