Potok is a compound of po- and -tok, where -tok is an ablaut form of PS *tekti "to flow" < IE *tekW- "to run, flow". Besides "potok", we have an independent word "tok" in Slavic, as well, meaning "a stream, flow" (used for rivers, too). I hope it's obvious now, that "potok" is by no means related to Gr. potamos.

 

There's one more word in Slavic, having the same meaning as "potok", or "river": CZ strouha, Russ. dial. strúgá,Sln. strúga, OCS struga < PS *struga < IE *sreu- "to flow" (Lith. strove._ "stream", G "Strom", Engl "Stream")
