Yes,

Norwegian and English is very simular in the use of tenses.

Aspect expressions, on the other hand, are fairely different in
Norwegian and English.

In Italian, a language I know fairely well, one uses the present
tense to express something in the past that continues into the
present, usully combined with the preposition "da". Ex: Abito qui da
due anni. - I have lived here in two years.
