BTW, the transition from Romance (e)sta- to Dutch staa(n) ís odd if
it's a loan, since the connection in Romance times between the two
verbs would be exclusively historical, not semantic; however, if they
are both induced by a substrate, that substrate might be responsible
for having placed 'be' and 'stand' (or 'sit') within a 'short
semantic distance', cf. the many placenames in -st (from IE *sed- or
*st-) in the Nordwestblock area and Low German -sete "inhabitant
of ...".
