This a<->o correspondence here is quite resembling the alternance in
German, esp. South German dialects versus Hochdeutsch as well as
earlier epochs (Old High German and Middle High German), such as: HDt.
hat - Sdt. hot; Hdt. [g&'hapt] - Sdt. [ko(p)t]; Hdt. Platz - Sdt. Plotz
(even [plo:tz]); Hdt. Mann - Sdt. Mo; Hdt. g(e)rad(e) - Sdt. grod; Hdt.
Katze - Sdt. Kotz; Hdt. Kalb - Sdt. Kojwe; Hdt. halb- - Sdt.
hojbert/hojwert; Hdt. kalt - Sdt. kojt etc. etc. (in some other
dialectal areas, some of [a] also become [o] or [inverted c], even in
Niederdeutsch/Plattdeutsch, a phenomenon remarkable even in the
Hochdeutsch spoken with a Hamburg accent.)
