In Finnish;

kaupunki - city < köping - market place, Swedish
linna - fortress, castle (as in Tallinn in Estonia [Danish Castle])

There are several words beginning with var-

vartio - guard point
varasto - warehouse
varastaa - to steal (to store someone else' goods)

But all these and related words are loans from Baltic or Germanic.

It seems that Hungarian and Finnish separated long before there were
any cities or fortresses in Finland so I would expect the Finnish
words to be loans from cultures or occupiers who built towns.

BTW crow in Finnish is 'varis', related to Hungarian 'varjú'.

are "kaupunkki" (town) and "linnoitus" (fortress). Both of them seem
compound words to me or at least fairly recent formations.
> With regard to "var(os)" I would also support an Iranic
origin, as well as the idea that the initial sound was a
semivowel "w". This is supported by the fact that Serbian/Croatian
not only has "varos" (reg.) for "(small) town" or "var" as an affix
in toponyms (e.g. Varazdin, Vukovar, Bjelovar) but also Orasac=place
name in Montenegro (attested in Njegos' Gorski vijenac", I think
also in Karadzic's "Pjesmarica" but I'm not sure there.).

which can be related to "var"(os). Which would support the Hungarian
etymology of "var" and "varos" in S.-Cr.
