                 Hello,

    In response to Marius:
I'm no Uralist, but AFAIK the Finnish words you asked for are "kaupunkki" (town) and "linnoitus" (fortress). Both of them seem compound words to me or at least fairly recent formations.
With regard to "var(os)" I would also support an Iranic origin, as well as the idea that the initial sound was a semivowel "w". This is supported by the fact that Serbian/Croatian not only has "varos" (reg.) for "(small) town" or "var" as an affix in toponyms (e.g. Varazdin, Vukovar, Bjelovar) but also Orasac=place name in Montenegro (attested in Njegos' Gorski vijenac", I think also in Karadzic's "Pjesmarica" but I'm not sure there.).
No, Bulgarian does not have "var" as an affix, or anything which can be related to "var"(os). Which would support the Hungarian etymology of "var" and "varos" in S.-Cr.
                        Regards,
                          Cristian
