Isn't *h2eh1[/3{s}] to be taken as equivalent to *h2ah1?3) Aside from length [*a:], what reasons (if any) prompt the reconstruction of the second laryngeal?4) Would you absolutely rule out a possible reduplication: *h2ah2[a]? I guess your answer is below. What would you expect the Palaic form to be if *h2 were the second laryngeal?Pat

The Anatolian cognates are Hitt. ha:ssa 'fireplace', ha:s, acc. ha:ssan
'potash', and Pal. ha:- 'be hot'. The Palaic root shows that the second
laryngeal was not *h2 (which would have been preserved). On the other
hand, given the consistent a-coloration of the root vowel (in those
branches that reflect the difference), at least one of the laryngeals
must be *h2. I've seen the 'burn' root reconstructed as *h2eh1/3(s)-. My
own preference for *h1 is motivated by the total absence of any
o-coloured forms, though admittedly we do not really know which
colouring effect gets the upper hand when *h2 and *h3 are adjacent to
the same vowel.
