Hello All,
I want to submit a point of discussion :
what origin could have in PAlb and in OldAlb, today Albanian Cluster -
aj inside a word (I mean exactly -aj not -ëj )
Based on 'lajthi' and 'shaj' 2 words discussed here,
the possible sources in OldAlb could be *auj and *uaj and also *auaj
Now these vocalic clusters of three or more vowels should arrive
for an original cluster in PAlb where we have more than only vowels :
Alb -aj < OldAlb *-auj < *-aunj < PAlb *-aunj
< *-aunj < PAlb *-adunj
Alb -aj < OldAlb *-uaj < *-uanj < PAlb *-uanj
< *-uanj < PAlb *-udanj
Alb -aj < OldAlb *-auaj < *-auanj < PAlb *-aduanj
< *-auanj < PAlb *-audanj
Some examples : Old Alb. PAlb.
Alb. lajthi 'hazel nut' < *l.uanj.thi < *l.uanj.thi < *(a)l.uanj.tsja
Alb. shaj 'to insult' < *sh.aunj < *sh.aunj.a < *s.adunj.a
Alb. laj 'to wash' < l.aun < *l.aunj.a < l.aunj.a
Alb. qaj 'to cry' < kl.aunj < *kl.aunj.a < k(e)l.aunj.a
Alb. shajtoj < Lat. sagittare?
Alb. gjaj 'to resemble' < ?
Alb. maj 'to fatten' < ?
Alb. mbaj 'to carry' < ?
Alb. ndaj 'towards' < ?
Alb. ndaj 'to cut' < ?
Alb. ngaj 'to run' < ?
Conclusion:
Seems that we need together an 'a', an 'u/w' and an 'j' to can
have 'aj' and not 'ëj' or something else in all these forms.
More recent sources are :
Alb. -ajk < OldAlb. -alk < PAlb -alk
----------------------------------------
Ex: ajkë < OldAlb. alkë < PAlb -alka
Alb. -ajg < OldAlb. -alg < PAlb -alg
----------------------------------------
bajgë < OldAlb. balgë < PAlb *balega
But not : jt < lt ( balta remain balta
naltë(var.lartë) remain naltë)
so there is no reason to say that we can have also
jth < lth
More recent we have also:
Alb aj < Old Alb al'i < PAlb ali
-------------------------------------------
Ex: aj < Old Alb al'i(u) < Lat. alium
faj < Old Ald fal'j(a) < Lat. *fallia
Any feedback?
Best Regards,
marius
