Kuhn observed several cases of k-/h- alternation of the same root in
placenames in the Nordwestblock area, which he explained as the
result of the area being invaded by Germanic speakers at the very
time when Grimm was beginning to apply. Some areas held out (or were
ignored) longer, and unshifted k- would hold out there. The same
mechanism may have applied to loans.
