In Scandinavian s-endings are actually not dropped, but changed to -
in most cases.

The genitive in -s is kept.


The exception is that the accusative case has become the universal
singular form.

The origin of the present ending -(e)r, is from the ending of the 2.
and 3. person present -r. Why the ยจ3. person also had ending -r is
somewhat obscure, probably the 2. person ending -r was transfered to
3. person too. If so the present ending ultimately originates from
the -s of the 2. person.
