Sappho (The beginning of her most famous ode, and the only one that survives
complete):
Poikilothron' athanat' Aphrodita
me: .... damna,
potnia, thumon.

"Rainbow-throned, deathless Aphrodite
don't ... conquer,
mistress, my soul"

des-poina must come from des-ponia, and the easiest origin for des-ponia is
*des-potnia, with loss of the t.
