Related to Slavic *z^elo~dI, Baltic *gi(:)lija:, Greek bálanos (<
*gWl.'h2-no-) and Armenian kaLin. The root is clearly *gWelh2-/*gWl.h2-,
extended with *-jo-, *-no- or *-Vnd(i)-. I'm not sure what to make of
the last suffix (if it's a suffix) -- any ideas? I thought of Pokorny's
*ond- 'stone' (Celtic *ondes-, Skt. adri-; Tolkien fans will recognise
Quenya ondo here), i.e. 'acorn' = 'oak-stone', but the 'stone' etymon is
very uncertain and the whole idea perhaps too far fetched. Anyway, for
purely formal reasons your suggested 'fruit of the land' is out of the
question.
