I remembered seeing something similar recently, but that was
Grk. oio:nós "bird of prey", supposedly from *aio:nos, and
not independent evidence (*h2wyoh1-n- ?).
Looking at entries with aiV- in Boisacq, I find a few
equations Greek *aiV- ~ other lgs. *sai(w)- or *sau(y)-, none
of them absolutely secure, but here they are:
aia:né:s "painful" ~ Lat. saevus ?
aiólos "moveable" ~ Goth. saiwala ?
aionáo: "make wet" ~ Lith. sývai
So perhaps Greek had *s- in aietos too: *sh2wyet-os,
syllabified as *sawyetos > aietos (no h- because of
dissimilation with inner -/h/- from *y and/or *w?). Come to
think of it, Brythonic "duck" has h- (We. hwyad, OCorn. hoet,
Bret. houad), left unexplained in IEW, but likely from *s-.
