I think something similar is going on in Welsh English. In Welsh
English, short stressed vowels in open syllables, e.g. the <o> in
<Roberts>, are lengthened. For the most part, these changes seem to
be allophonic. However, I've a strong feeling that <generally> is
now [dZe.nr&\lI] or something similar. Can any one who knows these
accents well comment?
