The fact as to why even native French speakers are apparently
confused about length probably has something to do with the
fact that there is little distinction made between the length
of these vowels!
Another factor must have something to do with French being a
syllable-timed language. So a double-long vowel if it were to
really exist, would throw off the whole rhythm of the language.
That's probably a good enough reason to reject [E:].
