In my view, the accusative merely comes from... lo and
behold... an earlier accusative. Of course, if you reach
back far enough well beyond the scope of what we could
sensibly call pre-IE, you'll find it used for some
other function (and yes, perhaps Miguel, you're right)
but this exceedingly early stage has little bearing on
IE itself in my opinion any more than IE grammar has
a direct bearing on Modern Pashto.
