Why not derive Greek _astu_ 'citadel, city' from *wadH 'pledge', >
Germanic *wadjam 'pledge' ( > English 'wed'), Latin vas, vad- (short
a!) 'surety', Lithuanian wadĂșoti 'redeem a pledge'. I conceive it
as the place of refuge of a defensive league of villagers - or is
this an anachronistic idea? This is certainly another root with *a.
