He deliberately omitted (or failed to include in later editions of the
book) many important insights that were current in his time
(1866-1936). He never revised the book to give due credit to Anatolian
and Tocharian data, to present an up-to-date account of the laryngeal
theory, etc. Despite its conservatism, however, the book is very
readable and its didactic value is high. I wouldn't hesitate to
recommend it to modern students, provided that it isn't going to be
the most recent introduction to IE linguistics on their reading list.
