You surely mean *stIblo 'stalk, stem, trunk' (the jer *I was vocalised
as /a/ in Serbian/Croatian, but cf. Pol. z'dz'bl/o 'stalk, blade of
grass' < s'c'bl/o < *stIblo, with what has a claim to being one of the
most difficult onsets even for Polish). It derives from *steibH- ~
*steip- (cf. Eng. stiff, Lat. stipula 'stalk', sti:pes (-itis) 'stake',
Skt. stibHi- 'clump, tuft'). Note the pervasive st- alliteration (even
in the glosses above). It's hard to say if these roots are ultimately
derived from or strictly cognate to *stah2-, but they must have been
phonaestetically related already in PIE.
