Does one have to? The connection between *pek^u- and *pek^(t)- would be more
than a folk etymology if you could show that *pek^u- ever meant specifically
'sheep' to the exclusion of other domesticated animals. As far as I can see,
the term means 'herd, livestock', etc., or 'cattle', and by extension
'movable property, wealth', rather than just 'sheep'. Even horses and dogs
are sometimes included.
