Indeed, they are known as onomatopia (I probably spelled that wrong).
In English we have the word cuckoo which imitates the sound of a bird
and is found in the phrase cuckoo clock. It's also used perjoratively
to mean insane. PIE has something like *khakhar to mean laughter.
