So, we'd had an older *s^ > s^W > sw.
 
Could you give an example of labialization of s^ in French and/or English?

/s^/ has a natural tendency to be labialized (as it is in e.g. English and
French).

The Welsh and Avestan reflexes of *sw (chw /xw/ and xs^v, respectively)
suggest that PIE *sw may have been realized as [s^W].
