Okay, let's get our facts right. The official language isn't "based" on the
"Mandarin dialect". The official language of China **is** Mandarin.
The Mandarin **language**. Mandarin has dialects all its own, mutually
unintelligible dialects, so it isn't fair to call Mandarin a "dialect". It
would
be like saying that French and Romanian are two dialects of Latin.

The "Chinese language" fantasy, I suspect, is the product of Westerners'
ignorance that caused people to lump all Asians, their languages and their
cultures into one undifferentiated group. Imagine confusing Finnish with
Italian. Not quite the same thing. Yet people will confuse Japanese
with Vietnamese or Mandarin with Cantonese. Hoeyde gam choen laa!
