I'm just considering it as a possibility without insisting that the
solution must be right. I ventured *h2, since in those cases where we
have a detectable laryngeal added to a root in derived thematic nouns,
it's usually *h2 (causing the aspiration of a preceding stop in
Indo-Iranian). Perhaps it was simply a noun-forming suffix, *-h2o-, like
*-so- or *-to-, but its function is not clear to me yet.
