Sihler says "Cases of final (short ) -es in Latin are always from *-ets,
either original as in miles (stem milet-) or via syncope, as in *hosti-potis

I am left unsure of this because of words like comes < *com-it-. I cannot
believe the "go" stem ever gave a form -et-, rather than -it-. But I'm open
to correction.
