Thanks for the answers so far.
Regarding the e/o-ablaut and the zero/normal-degree-ablaut.
I think that the timing of these was such that they prevented the
language from having phonetically a one-wovel-system. Ehat I think
is as follows.
-Some time far back the language had several wovels (at least a and
@)
-Then the zero/normal-degree-ablaut occured. This created the wovels
u/I phonetically.
-Then the rest of the wovels collapsed into e (or initially a as I
think)
-Then the o/e-ablaut occured.
This order of the events prevented the language from having
phonetically a one-wovel-system.
